Irène P. Mathieu, MD, MPH, FAAP (she/her/hers) is a healer and artist – an academic pediatrician, writer, educator, and public health researcher. She is the award-winning author of four poetry collections –  (Deep Vellum Press, 2023),  (Switchback Books, 2019),  (Trembling Pillow Press, 2017), and  (dancing girl press, 2014).

Irène is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, where she practices and teaches outpatient pediatrics and runs community-engaged research projects as the founder and principal investigator of the . She also serves as Assistant Director of Programs in Health Humanities in the School of Medicine. In this capacity, she created and runs the Health Equity & Justice Fellowship, teaches courses in literature and medicine at the undergraduate and medical student levels, and gives lectures around the country on using literature as a tool for health equity education.

Her writing and advocacy work have been featured in the Washington Post, LA TimesRichmond Magazine, NPR, and . Irène is a speaker with  and is represented by Patricia Nelson of . She lives with her family in Charlottesville, Virginia.
