He teaches applied health care ethics through the Health Care Ethics Internship.

His career has been shaped by his experience as a child diagnosed with a rare disease in Mexico, where limited access to life-saving medicine led him to move to the United States in search of health care. Earlier in his career, he helped lead one of the largest free health care systems in the United States at UCLA Health.

In public policy, Hayes-Mota contributed to health policy work related to the Affordable Care Act through the RAND Corporation. He currently serves on the NIH Cures Acceleration Network Review Board, appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and has contributed expert guidance to global health and technology initiatives involving the European Commission, OpenAI, and the World Economic Forum.

An accomplished educator, Hayes-Mota previously served as a Senior Lecturer and Practitioner-in-Residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he designed and taught courses on the ethics of biopharmaceuticals. His teaching has focused on the ethical complexities of drug development, patient access, health innovation, and responsible leadership in biotechnology.

He has served in governance and advisory roles with organizations including Fenway Health, Save One Life, the MIT Alumni Association, the NIH, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. His work and commentary have appeared in Forbes, Fast Company, STAT, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Inc. Magazine, NPR, MIT Technology Review, Business Insider, and The Bridge, the journal of the National Academy of Engineering.

Hayes-Mota has been recognized by Business Insider as one of six powerful LGBTQ+ executives to have on corporate boards and by PharmaVoice as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the life sciences industry.

He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and literature, a master of science in AI engineering systems, and an MBA from MIT, as well as a master of public administration from Harvard University. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in AI and Machine Learning at George Washington University, with research focused on AI in drug development and health care.
